1. निम्नलिखित गद्यांशों  व्याख्या कीजिए: 

(क) यह सब मेरे कर्मों का फल है। आह! एड़ी में कैसी पीड़ा हो रही है; यह कांटा कैसे निकलेगा ? भीतर उसका एक टुकड़ा टूट गया है। कैसा टपक रहा है। नहीं, मैं किसी को दोष नहीं दे सकती। बुरे कर्म तो मैंने किए हैं, उनका फल कौन भोगेगा! विलास-लालसा ने मेरी यह दुर्गती की। मैं कैसी अंधी हो गई थी, केवल इन्द्रियों के सुखभोग के लिए अपनी आत्मा का नाश कर बैठी! मुझे कष्ट अवश्य था। मैं गहने-कपड़े को तरसती थी, अच्छे भोजन को तरसती थी, प्रेम को तरसती थी। उस समय मुझे अपना जीवन दुःखमय दिखाई देता था, पर यह अवस्था भी तो मेरे पूर्वजन्म के कर्मों का ही फल थी। और क्या ऐसी स्त्रियाँ नहीं हैं, जो उससे अधिक कष्ट झेलकर भी अपनी आत्मा की रक्षा करती हैं ?

(ख) किसान कुली बनकर कभी अपने भाग्य-विधाता को धन्यवाद नहीं दे सकता, उसी प्रकार जैसे कोई आदमी व्यापार का स्वतन्त्र सुख भोगने के बाद नौकरी की पराधीनता को पसन्द नहीं कर सकता। सम्भव है कि अपनी दीनता उसे कुली बने रहने पर मजबूर करे; पर मुझे विश्वास है कि वह इस दासता से मुक्त होने का अवसर पाते ही तुरन्त अपने घर की राह लेगा और फिर उसी टूटे-फूटे झोपड़े में अपने बाल-बच्चों के साथ रहकर संतोष के साथ कालक्षेप करेगा।

(ग) मैं तुम्हें जितना सरल हृदय समझती थी, तुम उससे कहीं बढ़कर कूटनीतिज्ञ हो। मैं तुम्हागा आशय समझती हूँ और इसलिए कहती हूँ, जैसी तुम्हारी इच्छा। पर शायद तुम्हें मालूम नहीं कि युवती का हृदय बालक के समान होता है। उसे जिस बात के लिए मना करो, उसी तरफ लपकेगा। अगर तुम आत्म प्रशंसा करते, अपने कृत्यों की अप्रत्यक्ष रूप से डींग मारते, तो शायद मुझे तुमसे अरुचि हो जाती। अपनी त्रुटियों और दोषों का प्रदर्शन करके तुमने मुझे और भी वशीभूत कर लिया। तुम मुझसे डरते हो, इसलिए तुम्हारे सम्मुख न आऊँगी, पर रहूँगी तुम्हारे ही साथ।

(घ) हर एक अपना छोटा-सा मिट॒टी का घरौंदा बनाए बैठा है। देश बह जाए, उसे परवाह नहीं। उसका घरौंदा बचा रहे! उसके स्वार्थ में बाधा न पड़े। उसका भोला-भाला हृदय बाजार को बंद देखकर खुश होता है। सभी आदमी शोक से सिर झुकाए, त्योरियां बदले उन्‍्मत से नजर आते। सभी के चेहरे भीतर की जलन से लाल होते। वह न जानती थी कि इस जन-सागर में ऐसी छोटी-छोटी कंकड़ियों के गिरने से एक हल्कोरा भी नहीं उठता, आवाज तक नहीं आती।

2. सुमन की चारित्रिक विशिष्टताएँ बताइए।

3. प्रेमाश्रम’ के औपन्यासिक शिल्प पर विचार कीजिए।
